TEXTILES - FABRIC CONSTRUCTION


TOPIC - TEXTILE FIBERS

  • Discuss the variety of textile fibers: natural, cellulosic, synthetic, bio-based
  • Show videos of how each of these types of fibers are produced.

 

TOPIC - HOW AND WHY TEXTILE FIBERS ARE BLENDED

  • Show videos of how fibers are blended to create yarns and fabric with improved properties.
  • Discuss the reasons blending of fibers are done.


TOPIC - DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KNITTED, WOVEN & NON-WOVEN FABRIC

  • Show a video of each type of construction
  • Show an illustration or draw the loop pattern in a knitted fabric.
  • Show an illustration or draw the interlacing pattern in a woven fabric.
  • Show a diagram of a process used to make a non-woven fabric
  • Pass around fabric swatches of all three types of construction.
  • Discuss the properties of each construction regarding feel, stretch, drape, ect.
  • Have the students develop a list of examples of where each type of fabric construction is used.

TOPIC - HOW ARE FINISHES ADDED TO FABRIC

  • Discuss the type of finishes and reasons that finishes are applied to fabric
  • Video of Finishing Process


TOPIC - DISCUSS THE PARTS OF VARIOUS APPAREL

  • Shirt: body, sleeves, cuffs, collar, neck, seams, hem, pleat, dart, gusset, placket, button
  • Dress: bodice, skirt, sleeves, cuff, collar, corset, seams, hem, pleat, stomacher
  • Pants: waistband, legs, belt loops, pockets, inseam, outseam, cuff, rise, seat

  • Have the students look up and write out the definition of each of these terms from the Textile Dictionary
  • Discuss the purpose of seams, hems, pleats, gussets & plackets. Find the location of each on apparel.
  • Draw and label the parts of a shirt, dress, pant, coat and suit
