TEXTILES - GENERAL

TOPIC - FABRICS ARE ALL AROUND US

Lead a discussion of where fabrics are used:
  • In the home
  • In what you wear
  • In the car
  • In the school
  • In restaurants
  • In a hospital

Discuss examples of occupations that require fabrics with special properties

TOPIC - FABRICS FEEL DIFFERENT

Provide fabric swatches or garments for the students to pass around and touch. Select fabrics that have different feels due to their fiber content, construction, texture or thickness.

Examples:

  • Fabric made from different natural fibers: cotton, wool, angora, alpaca, linen, rayon
  • Fabric made from synthetic fiber: polyester, nylon, linen, spandex, microfiber
  • Knitted, woven and non-woven fabrics
  • Textures: Choose a variety of feels. Examples: silk scarf, nylon mesh, ribbed sweater, fuzzy sweater, corduroy, burlap
  • Thickness: sheer to heavy. Examples: silk scarf, handkerchief, shirt fabric, pant fabric, towel, denim, canvass
  • Have students describe what makes the fabric feel different
