Pre-K to Grade 1 Students
Teacher Elements

Individual Teacher Elements are currently in development for each of the class grade groupings. The Elements will provide teachers with a variety of tools to aid in educating students about textiles, and will include an archive of lesson plans shared by other teachers.

An example lesson plan is provided below:

Lesson Plan: Introduction to Textiles

Objective:

  • Introduce young children to textiles and their everyday uses.
  • Help children identify different types of textiles through touch and observation.
  • Encourage creativity and expression through a simple textile art project.

 

Materials Needed:

  • Various fabric samples (cotton, wool, silk, etc.)
  • Textile products (clothing, towels, blankets, etc.)
  • Picture books about textiles (e.g., "Extra Yarn," "Corduroy")
  • Large fabric scraps or swatches • Glue, safety scissors, markers, paper


Lesson Duration: 30-45 minutes

Introduction (5 minutes):

  1. Begin by showing children different fabric samples and ask if they can identify any.
  2. Read a picture book related to textiles, such as "Extra Yarn" by Mac Barnett, to introduce the concept of textiles in a fun and engaging way.

Activity 1: Fabric Exploration (10 minutes):

  1. Pass around fabric samples for children to touch and feel.
  2. Encourage them to describe the textures and colors they observe.

Activity 2: Textile Collage (15 minutes):

  1. Provide each child with paper and fabric scraps.
  2. Allow them to cut or tear the fabric and glue it onto the paper to create a collage.
  3. Encourage creativity by letting them arrange the fabric pieces however they like.

Discussion (5 minutes):

  1. Gather the children together and ask them to share their collages.
  2. Discuss the different types of fabrics they used and how they feel.

Conclusion (5 minutes):

  1. Review the key points: what textiles are, their everyday uses, and the different textures and colors.
  2. Thank the children for their participation and creativity.

Assessment:

  • Observe children's participation and engagement.
  • Assess their understanding through their ability to describe fabrics and their creativity in the collage activity.
