The Textile Gateway Mission & Overview

The textile industry is moving toward an exciting future driven by new technologies and the demand for more sustainability. New textile innovations are occurring that even a few years ago were not envisioned. The advancement of smart textiles, bio-based/bio-inspired textiles, and 3-D textiles, and the growing usage of robotics and AI applications are already requiring scientists and engineers, who never thought of being involved with textiles. New research is going into areas that almost sounds like science fiction. The opportunities provided to today's students to become the next generation of leaders, innovations, and workforce in the dynamic world of textiles are exciting!

The mission of The Textile Gateway is to educate and excite students at all levels about textiles; to outreach and promote career paths in the industry; and, serve as a catalyst for future innovation. The program is for the benefit of the textile industry and has the active support and expanding participation of the industry as a whole.

Outreach to elementary and high school students is a primary focus. In the US each state has Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and Family & Consumer Science (FACS) curriculum for elementary and high school students, to develop basic skills and learn about a range of careers. However, these program often lack resources for textiles. As a result, too little is being done to educate young students about textiles and its many career paths.

Early education is crucial for sparking curiosity, creativity, and an appreciation for textiles in young minds. The Gateway provides students in every grade through high school with a wealth of age-appropriate resources designed to engage and inspire. From activities and fun projects to educational videos and informative articles, our resources make learning about textiles interesting and exciting for all ages.

Administrators and teachers involved with CTE/FACS programs are excited to hear what the Gateway is doing and want to know how they can help. The Gateway welcomes all comments, and also provides teachers with the opportunity to interact, and to share ideas, and lesson plans, which will be archived on the website.

Outreach is also provided to students at colleges, universities and trade schools. The Gateway aids future leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs by bridging the gap between academic studies and real-world applications. Here you'll find an array of resources, and gain access to industry professionals who share their knowledge and insights through articles, videos and live events.

Students are provided a real world perspective regarding the changing needs of the industry and the skills necessary to be successful. The industry is encouraged to develop active relationships with both students and schools through collaboration, mentoring and internships. A direct connection is also provided for students to learn about scholarships, mentorships, internships, apprenticeships and skills-training offered through industry workforce development programs.
